Principal Investigator
Georgios A. Pavlopoulos holds a BSc/Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Athens in Greece, a Masters (MRes) degree in Bioinformatics from the University of Leeds - Department of Biochemistry in the UK, and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-Heidelberg). Additionally, he obtained his MBA jointly from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
His professional experience includes positions as a postdoctoral fellow at the Catholic University of Leuven - Department of Electrical Engineering in Belgium and as a bioinformatics instructor and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Crete - Faculty of Medicine in Greece. During this tenure, he served as the elected executive secretary of the Hellenic Society for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (HSCBB). Subsequently, he joined the DOE Joint Genome Institute of Lawrence Berkeley National Labs in California, USA, as a Bioinformatics postdoctoral researcher.
Since 2018, Georgios has served as a bioinformatics consultant for several companies in the USA and has been the Director of Bioinformatics (Research Associate Professor) as well as an elected member of the Scientific Board at the Institute of Fundamental Biological Research (IFBR) - Biomedical Sciences Research Center (BSRC) 'Alexander Fleming' in Athens, Greece. Concurrently, he holds the position of Head of Bioinformatics at the Center of New Biotechnologies & Precision Medicine at the University of Athens Medical School.
As of 2024, he has been appointed the role of Director of Research (Research Full Professor) at BSRC 'Alexander Fleming' Institute and serves as the Managing Director and co-founder of BioInnovation Greece. His contributions to the field have led to recognition as one of the top 2% of scientists globally in his domain. He has secured competitive grants, has organized numerous international conferences, and has published extensively in prestigious journals such as Nature, Cell, Science, NAR, and Nature Biotechnology.
